As the frontier of DJ’ing has taken many new shapes, a new needle was needed. It handles 100% of the DJ’s needs. Anything the futuristic DJ gives it, it can take. At the same time it reproduces the sounds accurately without wear on the vinyl.
Ortofon found ThudRumble (QBert and Yoga Frog) to help create this. In
their almost century of dominance, with a rich history of in house design
and engineering, ThudRumble was the first Ortofon opened its doors to.
And the result??? The QBert signature cartridge.
Welcome to wonderful Denmark, ThudRumble’s destination is a little
town called Nakskov situated on a tiny island 2 hours south of Copenhagen.
Let’s put the beautiful scenery aside, it’s time to create
the perfect cartridge.
In steps Per Winfeld, Ortofon’s chief of engineering. Per is one
of the main reason’s ThudRumble took on this project. Per has been
designing the world’s standard needles for over 40 years! It’s
like learning from the true Obi Wan Kanobi of the science and technology
of cartridges. Per wanted ThudRumble to take him further than he’s
ever gone before. FRESH!!! A challenge was on!
Per’s mechanisms and toys are a sight to see. They’re all
one of a kind and handmade. We’re talking turntables with 3 arms,
microscopes of every shape and size, hundreds of unnamable creations and
even a potato clock! With all the toys it’s amazing any work got
done.
The lab carries over to Ortofon’s factory. Here, every cartridge
is handmade. From the OMs to the Concorde’s to all of the HiFi needles,
it’s all done right here in our quiet little town. Nothing is outsourced,
everything from the rubber to the metal compounds are made here. But back
to our story……
Per and Ortofon spent many days working with ThudRumble all over the world….from
meetings in Hawaii to dinners in the Bay area and even a few open turntable
jam sessions in Denmark. They tried everything from different shaped diamonds
to various frequency roll off points. Finally, after 2 years of hard work
and testing, we’re proud to introduce the new DJ QBert Ortofon cartridges.
